RAW Side Table

The side table aims to provide a use for the 'waste' material left over from the forestry management process. Ash is currently being felled due to the ever spreading disease called Ash Dieback. These are often small dimension trees at roughly 18cm in diameter on average. These logs currently have no use for firewood sales, blanking etc due to their size and are left to decay. This encouraged me to look further at how they could be utilized and with as little processing as possible.

The concept that inspired this piece is the simplicity in its design and manufacturing. Through cutting the log in half in a 'S' shape, it creates two legs from one log. The turning process simply requires the removal of the bark and sapwood to expose the hard wood and reveal the beautiful grain.

Finally the piece is constructed using simple dowles which therefore allow for expansion and contraction of the wood as it settles into its surroundings.
